"The Decorated Book : Continuing a Tradition"
The Roger W. Moss Symposium
"The Athenaeum of Philadelphia is a library and museum founded in 1814. Its
legacy collections, surviving from the 19th and early 20th centuries, include
rich holdings in the designed bindings which provide inspiration to contemporary
book artists. Arts and Crafts Movement artists, such as Margaret Armstrong, the
studio of the Decorative Designers, and others, represent the depth of the
Athenaeum collections for decorated commercial bindings. This symposium, created
to accompany the "Decorated Book" exhibition, will provide a context for both
today's and yesterday's approach to the art of the book."

Richard Minsky: The Art of American Book Covers, 1875-1930
"Richard Minsky, the recipient of the 2011 Worldwide Books Award for
Publications from the Art Libraries Society of North America (ARLIS/NA), is a
book artist himself and the Founder and former Chairman of the Center for Book
Arts, an independent not-for-profit organization in New York City. Mr. Minsky
is the author of several books regarding the American decorated book at the
turn of the 20th century, including The Art of American Book Covers 1875-1930
which will be available at the reception. "
"Barbara Hebard: North Bennet Street School Bookbinding: Building on Tradition
to Produce Craft of the Future "
"In 2011 Barbara Adams Hebard received the Distinguished Alumni Award from North
Bennet Street School. After graduating in 1990 from NBSS, she became
Conservator at the Boston Athenaeum, where she also completed a study of the
role of women in the Athenaeum. In 2009 she joined the John J. Burns Library at
Boston College as Conservator. Active in the Guild of Book Workers, Ms. Hebard
has also curated such exhibitions as "Inspired Design: The Mentoring Stamp," for
the Smith College Book Arts Gallery. "
Susan J. Isaacs, Ph. D.: Deconstructed and Constructed: The Contemporary Book
"Dr. J. Susan Isaacs is Curator of Special Projects of the Delaware Center for
the Contemporary Arts, Wilmington, DE, and Professor of Art History/Curator
for the Center for the Arts and zman Galleries, Towson University, MD. Dr.
Isaacs will discuss books as hand-made objects, deconstructed objects,
installations, decorations, in the 20th and 21st centuries. "
