Hi Interest Group Leaders!
Can you help us drum up some volunteers for the ASCLA Awards Committee? Here is the message I sent out to ASCLA-L this morning. Please share!
We are looking for “a few good members” to volunteer for ASCLA’s Awards Committee and round out our committee roster for 2013-14. Participation is virtual—no conference attendance required!
Read more about what this volunteer position entails: http://ascla.ala.org/blog/2013/08/volunteer-opportunity-ascla-awards-committee/
New members are welcome and encouraged to participate…and “new” could even mean that you join today. :o)
ASCLA is a small and mighty division of ALA with a focus on innovation, accessibility and entrepreneurship. Our key constituencies are librarians serving people with disabilities; librarians serving incarcerated adults and youth; state library agencies; library consultants and independent librarians; and resource-sharing, network and consortia librarians, among many others. Our size means more opportunities for you to get involved in meaningful volunteer activities!
Learn more about ASCLA and membership in the division: http://www.ala.org/ascla/asclaourassoc/joinascla/joinascla
If you’re interested in participating, please send an e-mail to the following people prior to Sept. 1: ASCLA President Sara Laughlin (email@example.com, Award Committee Chair Will Reed (firstname.lastname@example.org) and ASCLA Marketing and Programs Manager Liz Markel (email@example.com) with the subject line “ASCLA Awards Committee Volunteer.”
Please forward and share this message widely. Thanks!
Per a discussion at ASCLA Board II, we have extended the deadline to July 31 for program, preconference and institute proposals for 2014.
This has also been sent to our Facebook page and Twitter feed (feel free to share/retweet) and to ascla-l (listserv).
Thanks in advance for sharing this info with members or member groups who are interested--or should be interested--in submitting a proposal.
Questions? Let me know. :o)
We have had some inquiries about how to leverage Twitter for interest group activities. After some research, I'd like to make the recommendation that we use hashtags to identify and link up interest group activities (vs. setting up independent interest group Twitter accounts. The rationale is below.
If you have questions, comments or concerns, please let me know right away. I'd like to start distributing the hashtags to the general ASCLA population for use leading up to conference, so unless I hear from you by this Friday, April 26, I will assume that the hashtags below are approved.
Why hashtags instead of separate Twitter accounts/handles?
In order for a tweet to have any impact, the account should have followers. ASCLA currently has 1,000+ followers on its Twitter account! It has taken several years to build this following. In addition, the creation and maintenance of separate accounts for each interest group would be very time consuming, not to mention the transition of the account to the new leader each year.
The benefits of hashtags:
- Anyone can use it. Subject matter experts, group leaders, group members and others can tweet using the tags, which means that anyone searching the tag *and* anyone following that person will see the tweet.
- It’s searchable. Anyone interested in the topic can find it.
- It allows us to use already established accounts--whether it’s members’ accounts, or ASCLA’s account (we can track the hashtags and retweet anything we find).
- It helps build relationships between individuals for exchanging and resharing valuable information.
Here's the general format for an interest group hashtag collection:
#asclaig (to indicate ASCLA interest group)
#libraries or #library (to indicate libraries)
Plus subject matter hashtag(s).
The suggested hashtags below have been (re)searched on Twitter to make sure they aren’t being used for other purposes.
#asclaig #alzheimers #library
#asclaig #futurist #libraries
#asclaig #cooperative #libraries
#asclaig #library #digitization
#asclaig #library #cooperation
#asclaig #library #delivery
#asclaig #library #consultant
#asclaig #incarcerated #youth #library
#asclaig #deaf #library
#asclaig #disabilities #access #library

#asclaig #universal #access #library
#asclaig #state #library

Dear ASCLA Interest Group Leaders,
We've just posted information about our fall ASCLA trip to the south of France and Monaco! It's a lovely trip to think about as winter drags on here in Chicago. ;-)
We would appreciate your help in promoting this trip! Here are things you can do to help spread the word:
- Share this Facebook photo on your personal Facebook page. You'll need to "like" ASCLA first in order to do this.
- Share a link to the blog post about this event by e-mailing it to your colleagues and friends: http://ascla.ala.org/blog/2013/03/tour-southern-france-and-monaco-in-oct...
- Retweet posts from our ASCLA Twitter account, @ala_ascla.
And, of course, we would love to have you join us on this trip!
More information is available at the ASCLA website: http://www.ala.org/ascla/travel-ascla
