Discussion Important information on submitting reports to the AASL Board

by Jonna Ashley (staff) on Fri, Jan 3, 2014 at 04:34 pm

See information below regarding a new process and structure to bring requests and information forward to the AASL Board of Directors.  Please note, the request for reports from committee/region/sections that are required of chairs before Midwinter is still in place and we ask that you continue to use that reporting structure for Midwinter 2014.  If you would like to request any action be taken by the AASL Board of Directors at the 2014 Midwinter meeting please see the new process below.

Starting in 2014 the attached board report has been approved by the AASL Executive Committee for use at all board meetings.  This new template allows any board member, committee chair/committee, and staff to submit both requests for action as well as reports of information to the board.  The intent of the new report is to ensure that all necessary information is presented to the board for consideration as well as a clearly spelled out request to the board and a consistent format.  Obviously there will be a learning curve to this new process but we are hopeful that this will enable a direct path to requesting action of the board as well as a higher level of information sharing and issue understanding.

To this end, anyone that wishes to submit a board report for the ALA Midwinter meeting needs to submit a report, using the attached template, no later than January 13th.  Prior to submitting a final version please make sure that both your board and staff liaison have received a draft to review.  You’ll note in the report template that a staffing and budget implication is required for all requests.  While there will certainly be some requests that will have no staffing or budget implications it is still a good idea to confirm with your committee’s staff liaison prior to submitting a final version.

If you have any questions or need assistance in submitting please don’t hesitate to contact your staff liaison.

Discussion Belated Greetings and Salutations!

by Sabrina Carnesi on Fri, Sep 28, 2012 at 02:17 am

My name is Sabrina Carnesi and I am, as I said in this year's virtual library orientation, the Happy Librarian.  This year has got to be my craziest year yet...I actually think that I have finally succeeded in over extending my schedule...LOL!  In my love of music, I  currently apprentice with a professional bell choir 65 miles away and I drive roundtrip to practice every Monday night...it's so worth it  because we are working on our Christmas music and there's nothing like a wonderful bell choir at Christmas.  So, instead of one month of xmas songs practice with my church choir...

So, instead of one month of xmas songs practice with my church choir....I now have figured out the way to Nirvana...4 months of xmas songs with the bells!...and yeap...it's one something in the morning...the only time of day I can do anything with a clear head.

This year is my first year as a single librarian.  Last year there were 2 positions, but budget cuts have caused my building not only to lose a librarian, it has also caused us to lose front office staff thus requiring the use of my library assistant in our main office behind the counter at dismissal time...not considering the hectic craziness of checkout in the library.  This, by the way, is a district mandate. . . but I can't turn my little introduction into a soapbox scenerio.  It does help that we now have self check out stations, but with this week being the first check out, we need to really oversee the procedures so students can actually utilize self check correctly.  I have decided to do everything in my power to run a paperless library this year with collaborative lessons, so lots of work this year will be via Google forms which allows for immediate feedback and I can email results to the classroom teacher in a pdf. ..

I have just finished...hopefully the final revision to my latest article, co-authored by a fabulous library science professor from the mid-west.  It is slated to appear in the winter issue of ALSC's Children and Libraries and focuses on school and public library cooperatives in action with a little bit of history thrown in for good measure.

I am the committee chair for AASL's Innovative Reading Grant and somehow or nutha' I have been selected to be on the 2013 Newbery Ballot!  Holy Books Batman!  I couldn't help but throw that in there...I am currently on YALSA's Popular Paperbacks for Young Adults committee.  I have just recently stepped in to help out on my state's conference planning committee with the philanthropic project.  The conference is coming up in November.  This year I am also on ALSC's liaison with National Children's Organizations; a staff book reviewer for Library Media Connection (this month I will not make my first deadline which is tomorrow...LOL!)  Anyways, I look forward to meeting everyone at the upcoming midwinter and working with you throughout the year!
