Discussion Future of BIGWIG

by Rachel Vacek on Mon, Jun 27, 2011 at 05:48 am

The BIGWIG Showcase for Monday, June 27th, 2011 has been CANCELED.

With the interest group's upcoming renewal, the IG co-chairs would like to discuss with the community the future of the group. BIGWIG was born of the time when blogs and wikis were new and mysterious and BIGWIG stepped in to move LITA forward when the existing structure of the organization could not adapt quickly enough. However, that time has passed, and it now seems that BIGWIG overlaps to varying degrees with these other LITA entities/events:

With the interest group's upcoming renewal, the IG co-chairs would like to discuss with the community the future of the group. BIGWIG was born of the time when blogs and wikis were new and mysterious and BIGWIG stepped in to move LITA forward when the existing structure of the organization could not adapt quickly enough. However, that time has passed, and it now seems that BIGWIG overlaps to varying degrees with these other LITA entities/events:

  • Emerging Technologies Interest Group
  • Mobile Computing Interest Group
  • Top Technology Trends Panel Discussion
  • Coffee and Conversation with Experts
  • Web Coordinating Committee (now handles LITA Blog and Wiki)
  • Various task forces formed to investigate solutions to technological challenges for LITA or even ALA that BIGWIG previously explored or supported

Questions:

  • Should this IG refocus and develop in a different direction?  If so, what should that be?
  • Is the Social Software Showcase, which was canceled this year, still a good format for a program?  Is there another approach for programming?
  • Does the brand of BIGWIG and the energy and enthusiasm surrounding it need to be continued with or without an Interest Group behind it?  How does the brand stay alive and meaningful?
  • If this IG is to continue, it will need enthusiastic leadership.  How do we attract new membership?
  • Should BIGWIG evolve into something other than an Interest Group?  If so, what would that be?
  • Or should BIGWIG be retired having served its purpose?

We've had our BIGWIG meeting already at this ALA, and 5 people in attendance. It's now time for your thoughts.  Pease consider participating in this poll and by adding your comments below.

Thanks,

Rachel Vacek and Michele Mizejewski, BIGWIG Co-chairs

The BIGWIG Interest Group Meeting will be held on Saturday, June 25 from 4:00-5:30pm at the Intercontinental, Poydras room. With the interest group's upcoming renewal, the IG co-chairs would like to discuss the future of the group.

So this big question we’d like to discuss with the BIGWIG community is: Should this IG refocus and develop in a different direction? Or should it be retired having served its purpose? If you can't attend, please leave your comments here. You can also weigh in through this poll.

All are welcome!

Once done posting a topic, you can view and vote on your favorite topics here: http://yourbigwig.com/topics/2010

A topic can be anything related to libraries and emerging technology, from social media to discovery platforms to open-source tools to using tech tools in new or innovative ways. Use your imagination!

Also, if you are interested in presenting on this topic yourself, please put your name down - and you will be contacted with details following the voting.

Please keep topics somewhat general - but provide more details, if desired, in the "comments" portion. Be sure to suggest and vote on topics/presenters by next Friday, May 14th!

BIGWIG stands for the Blogs, Interactive Groupware Wikis Interest Group, but since its founding in 2005 BIGWIG has been the "Social Software" IG of LITA. Unlike most Interest Groups, BIGWIG is active throughout the year. We are responsible for maintaining the LITABlog, and LITA Wiki. Additionally, we have taken on several projects since our inception including conference blogging and podcasting, and podcasts of interviews with candidates for LITA offices.

BIGWIG also puts on the Social Software Showcase, an online unconference occuring around and during the time of ALA Annual. The Showcase is made up of a wiki where each year we ask our presenters on cutting edge technology and social software to post their presentations. Regardless of where you are in the world, you will have the opportunity to discuss the presentations on the wiki. We have also be have a face to face roundtable discussion with some of our presenters at ALA Annual. Check out some of the content from last year's Showcase to see some of the topics discussed.
