Too often we are driven by motivated reasoning to rationalize our beliefs, even mistaken ones, to protect our egos or make ourselves socially desirable. We defend our beliefs as a soldier might, in fierce and uncompromising ways. But this can lead to cognitive distortions and unsound judgments. If we want to be wrong less often, if we want to understand the world as it really exists, we must instead cultivate what Galef calls scout mindset, "the motivation to see things as they are, not as you wish they were."
Scout mindset comprises a number of techniques, dispositions, and habits of mind that anyone can learn. By reading this book and discussing its contents with other would-be scouts, you'll improve your ability to reason and persuade. You'll learn how to marshal the best evidence in support of your claims and identify the cognitive biases that often thwart our best efforts to think rationally. And you'll do all of this for free! There's no charge to attend the book club, and the first 300 registrants will receive a free eBook of The Scout Mindset
We'll gather for facilitated book discussion on Thursday, 6/30 at 4pm EST, and participate in online engagements throughout the following week. Julia Galef will give her keynote address on Thursday, July 7th at 4pm EST. Don't wait; register today!
The inaugural HxLibraries Community Read is supported in full by Heterodox Academy. The ability for HxA to provide Grants for HxCommunities events and other activities is made possible in full through the support of the John Templeton Foundation. The opinions expressed at these events (or through such activities) are those of the individual Grantees, organizers, speakers, presenters, and attendees of such events/activities and do not necessarily reflect the views of Heterodox Academy and/or the John Templeton Foundation.
