Call for Proposal - ALA Core Virtual Interest Group Week

  • 1.  Call for Proposal - ALA Core Virtual Interest Group Week

    Posted Jun 29, 2021 10:12 AM

The ALA Core Metadata Interest Group seeks speakers to present at its meeting during the ALA Core Virtual Interest Group Week, held on July 28th, 1 pm CST, 2021.

Libraries are increasingly realizing the importance of equity, diversity, and inclusion in their work. Though not often apparent, metadata work is essential in this effort. Is your library doing something different or innovative in the area of inclusion and accessibility? Have you done a project or worked on addressing problems about this in your own library?  If so, we want to hear from you! Consider submitting your proposal for a 15-minute presentation at the Core Metadata Interest Group session, followed by discussion.

Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

    • Creating metadata for equity, diversity, and inclusion
    • Problematic Metadata Management (e.g. embedded biases, harmful language, "decolonizing", )
    • How Linked Data can help with improving EDI in metadata
    • Potential issues that might arise from using more diverse sources for metadata in an effort to help combat EDI issues (e.g. compatibility loss due to usage of different thesauri)
    • The tension between good metadata, EDI, and patron focused/centered metadata
    • Promoting awareness of EDI in metadata through various channels, such as LIS curriculum and other training opportunities

Please submit your proposal by emailing the Interest Group's Programming Co-chairs, Mingyan Li, and Rachel Berman Turner, by Friday, July 2, 2021. The presenters will be notified of decisions by Friday, July 16th.

Your proposal should include the following:

The name, email, job title, and affiliated institution of the presenter(s), the title of the presentation, and an abstract not to exceed 300 words.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact Mingyan Li (mli5@uic.edu) or Rachel Berman Turner (turnerr@binghamton.edu), Core MIG Programming Co-Chairs.

The Metadata Interest Group meeting will take place during the 2021 ALA Core Virtual Interest Group Week on Wednesday, July 28, 2021, from 2:00-3:00 pm Eastern Time.
