  • 1.  Books by LGBTQ+ Authors

    Hi folks,

LCC doesn't do a great job of identifying books by LGBTQ+ authors (nor, to my knowledge, does DDC). You can find books about LGBTQ+ people and books by LGBTQ+ people if they are autobiographical (though even this sometimes fails), but the difficulty arises when you want to find books by LGBTQ+ authors on another topic.

I feel like this is the kind of thing that Wikidata could help with, but there's an underrepresentation problem there. If I want to use Wikidata for this purpose, I'm going to have to do the research and contribute it myself.

I wonder if anyone's aware of any other tools that already have this information. If your library has NoveList, could you check some author characteristics for me, please?

Or, and this is why I'm asking here, do you have any creative suggestions to solve this problem?

    Thanks!

    Hi Thomas,

In case it's of interest or helps, here are some articles I looked at while I was investigating the use of the 386 MARC field for identifying the characteristics of authors/creators (plus some of my notes). The main thing I took away is that labeling authors is challenging, and it can have all sorts of ethical and practical complications.
