Wayfinding signage at Target

  • 1.  Wayfinding signage at Target

Here's something I saw at Target earlier this week:

A sign at the entrance to a Target store giving directions to each department. The sign includes store maps which you can take.
Target has always had a wayfinding problem because the aisles circle around both vertically and horizontally, and they're labelled with letters in a way which is beyond my understanding at least.  Knowing that an item you want is on aisle H13 doesn't help at all, because there's no way to find aisle H13.

In my opinion, libraries need something like this signage at the entrance to help orient new patrons, even if it's just to show what's on each floor, or what's on the right and what's on the left.  And the map dispenser box is a great idea, too.  But that's not the point I want to make today.

When someone goes to your web site, they judge the organization and ease of navigation against all the other web sites they visit.  Equally, if people see this kind of signage often - and they like it - they'll expect it at the library.
