At ALA Annual 2021, Council approved CD53 Resolution to Achieve Carbon Neutrality for ALA Conferences. The ALA Council Committee on Sustainability was charged with assisting and tracking progress toward this challenging goal. The attached document, "Carbon Neutral / Carbon Offset FAQ," was presented to ALA Council at their meeting at LibLearnX 2022 to offer a very brief primer for those new to the conversation around carbon neutrality and ethical carbon offsets.

The ALA Council Committee on Sustainability feels it will take every ALA member and exhibitor who attends ALA Conferences to step up to help with this effort. Our hope is that this first, foundational, bit of info will help with future conversations around this topic as we move towards meeting ALA Council's goal by 2025 and deepen ALA members' understanding of this timely and important topic in the face of the impacts of climate change.

In the short term, we hope this document will help ALA members feel more confident and comfortable with choosing the carbon offset option when registering for the 2022 ALA Annual Conference. In our opinion, ALA Conference Services Staff have done a good job in choosing a carbon offset company that is ethical and truly makes a difference with the funds provided.

    Signed,

Matthew Bollerman, Member, ALA Council Committee on Sustainability and PLA

Thank you Matthew.  I look forward to sharing this Q&A with my chapter Board in the hopes of starting a similar conversation there.
