Oct 1 #DefendResearch webinar: “Defending Academic Freedom in Texas and Florida: On-the-Ground Stories of Strategy and Solidarity"

  • 1.  Oct 1 #DefendResearch webinar: “Defending Academic Freedom in Texas and Florida: On-the-Ground Stories of Strategy and Solidarity"

The October 1 #DefendResearch webinar will be focused on Texas and Florida, where governing bodies there have engaged in longstanding attacks on academic and intellectual freedom at state higher education institutions, especially in areas related to race, ethnicity, and gender identity. Those attacks have been amplified by the current Trump administration's attempts to censor research and knowledge related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI); gender/gender identity; critical examinations of U.S. history; and other topics. Despite this intensification, faculty, students, and staff have not passively accepted this situation, but instead have responded by resisting/organizing at home and forming bridges of solidarity across institutional and state boundaries.
In this webinar we'll hear directly from Dr. Shawntal Z. Brown, Ph.D., Amanda Garcia, Dr. Jonathan Scott Perry, and Dr. J. Michael Butler, faculty and staff at several Texas and Florida colleges and universities, about the realities they are confronting, the organizing they are doing, and the solidarity and support that the larger community can provide.
