Promoting Equity in Information Literacy Instruction Through Universal Design for Learning

    Wednesday, March 29, 2023

    2pm Eastern (11am Pacific | 12pm Mountain | 1pm Central)

    Cost: Free

Description: To make information literacy instruction accessible to our users, it is important to practice inclusive and equitable pedagogy wherever possible. One effective and manageable way is by incorporating the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) into one-shots, learning objects, asynchronous instruction, embedded instruction, general presentation skills, and more. UDL helps account for visible and invisible disabilities, neurodiversity, preferred learning modalities, and different communication styles to provide equitable access to information in any learning environment. This webinar will outline the principles of UDL and demonstrate how to translate them into tangible options for equitable information literacy instruction in a variety of modalities.

About the Presenter: Kristina Clement, MA, MSIS is the Student Outreach and Sponsored Programs Librarian and Librarian Assistant Professor for the Kennesaw State University Library System and is the Editor-in-Chief and co-founder of the Journal of Open Educational Resources in Higher Education. She regularly works with transfer students, first-generation students, veterans, and other non-traditional populations to help them find their home in the library. Kristina enjoys presenting and publishing about UDL in library instruction; outreach to transfer students and first-generation students; middle management in libraries; open educational resources; and the faux-equity of the one-shot model of information literacy instruction.
