The new E-Rate wi-fi hotspots program is under threat. Congress is considering a resolution, S.J.Res.7 and H.J.Res.33, that would end the E-Rate hotspots program for libraries and schools, effective immediately. Hundreds of libraries have already applied, requesting thousands of wi-fi hotspots to meet the demand in their communities. This resolution would terminate the funding for any existing contracts that libraries and schools may already have put into place to take advantage of this program, limiting their ability to provide mobile wi-fi hotspots to library patrons and students who need them most. If passed, this resolution would widen the digital divide, leaving many households and individuals-especially those in rural and low-income communities-without access to essential connectivity. Worst of all, a Congressional Review Act resolution, if passed, precludes any future FCC action to add hotspots to the eligible services list.
Library workers know the impact of a wi-fi hotspot for a library patron studying for the GED, looking for a job, attending telehealth appointments, or keeping up with schoolwork. Please urge your members of Congress to oppose S.J.Res.7 and H.J.Res.33 and protect E-rate funding for mobile hotspot lending programs. It only takes a minute to act, but the impact on our communities will last a lifetime.
Act now! Send your message and ensure every library patron has the connectivity they need to learn, work, access services, and achieve their goals.
