Thank you for all the wonderful colleagues for the energy and action orientation they brought to our meeting last Friday. I am posting the minutes from that meeting here so if others want to join, please come at our next meeting on June 9 @ 1 PM! We are planning free and paid workshops, presentations, free directory, get togethers! See you at one of our events, Martha

2021 Meetings
Every other month the second Friday at 1PM Eastern time.
ALA Connect space: http://www.ala.org/core/member-center/interest-groups/library-consulting
Next Meeting: July 9, 2021 1 - 2 PM Eastern time
May 14, 2021
1 PM Eastern time
Attendees: Martha Kyrillidou, Rachel Vacek, Nancy Bolt, Michelle Frisque, Christine Peterson, Val Edwards, Laura Rose Taylor, Carolyn Norman, Charles Forrest, Ashley Biggs, Ken Varnum, Katie McDonough, Mechael Charbonneau
Agenda:
- Subgroups report on progress on:
- Skills Directory (Nancy and Carolyn)
- CORE Library Consulting Group Presentations (Ken, Laura, Michelle)
- Workshop Proposal: Assembling a Consulting Toolkit: What you Need to Know to be a Successful Library Consultant (Claire, Christine, Martha, Nancy, Carolyn)
Notes:
Skills Directory
- Working through format
- Who should be included - anyone who is a consultant
Core Library Consulting Group Presentations
- Challenging because there was no communication with the group working on the consulting workshop
- Outstanding questions to CORE staff, e.g., can we use their platform, with or without registration fee
- Our preference is that this is a no-cost series. If Core decides on providing only fee-based series, what would we do? Maybe one of our institutions would allow us to use their platforms.
- Hour of free consulting? Have done this before during ALA; advice could go to client or another consultant; could do this virtually as well. Third path. Good marketing tool. Known as "Consultants Giving Back."
- Would Core let us use its name if we aren't doing a "Core Event"?
- Financial considerations (more than small registration fees) can be serious impediments to junior staff who are thinking about consulting as a longer-term goal
- Would like to get this going: possibly a blog post; or to schedule something in the fall, maybe summer
- Two possible ideas: intro to consultancy and what do you need to become a consultant
Workshop Proposal
- First meeting coming up to refine/define workshop proposal for ALA 2022 conference (in person event)
- Nancy has shared documents used for original workshop; group should update the material
Core Forum - Baltimore in the fall - Christine Peterson
How this group shares information:
- ALA Connect - Library Consulting Interest group space
- Not an easy space to us; more pull than push; overwhelming
- Google Docs - folders and files
- Use for working documents/spaces, then move to Connect after things are finalized
- ALA Connect emails - individual vs. digest
- Additional thing to note: Interest group members do not need to be members of Core, or even of ALA. Anyone with an ALA account can join a Core interest group in ALA Connect. Conveners must be Core members, but anyone can join or leave an interest group at any time. If open to anyone, saving files in Google docs is easier to share possibly.
