Presentation and open discussion: Subtle balance between traditional and modern terminology represented by Library of Congress Subject Headings.

The delicate balance between historical and new terminology used by Library of Congress Subject Headings was, is and will be a topic of many professional discussion. Recently we have witnessed how Subject Headings can spark a heated debate within libraries across the nation. They can also stoke the flames of discontent within the nation itself. The growing number of examples of historical terms or lack of updated or more inclusive and equitable headings within Authority File is a topic we should continue to discuss and consider as an ongoing challenge for catalogers to create authorities that will keep the balance between traditional and modern description of identities, topics, places and events.

Session moderator: Martha Rice Sanders, Innovative Senior Systems Librarian, Massachusetts.
