Here is an update on how the "ASGCLA Transitions 2020" affects Interest Groups. Yes, ASGCLA is facing the need to disband as an independent division.
The ASGCLA Board, with the input of the designated directors, discussed options of other units within ALA that could incorporate and support disparate interests of ASGCLA's five areas of responsibility. In early May, Tracie Hall and I met with several directors of ALA divisions and offices to find areas of synergy for ASGCLA interest groups with similar audiences. These preliminary discussions identified areas of ALA where members can continue professional growth and contributions along with efforts to advocate for accessibility. The discussions in May resulted in a preliminary listing of ASGCLA Interest Group Overlap with other parts of ALA. For the Collaborative Digitization, Consortial eBooks, and Consortium Management Interest Groups as well as the Library Consulting Interest Group, the recommended division to incorporate the Interest Group members is Core (new division formed from the merger of ALCTS, LITA and LLAMA). The reasons for this choice are that Core is a new division whose members focus on similar activities across types of libraries. Members of ASGCLA Interest Groups are invited to join working groups to determine Core's new or merged interest groups.
