  • 1.  Planetarium, recording studio and physics museum in a new library

    Posted Jul 15, 2021 11:48 AM

    Hi,

We are planning a new library in our city which has a population of 80,000 people. We are including space for an auditorium and a makerspace.

In addition, we are also considering three other ideas that may be more controversial and we are not sure if they have been tried elsewhere, or how successful they are likely to be. We are including the provision of space for a:

    • Planetarium.
    • Recording studio.
    • Physics museum.

Early research suggests that the planetarium will require a ceiling that is fifteen feet above the ground. We hope to provide a recording studio for local musicians. We have seen a physics museum in Lisbon, Portugal which we like. It featured very small exhibits illustrating, for example, how a lever works, how electricity can create a magnet, etc.

I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has experience in providing any of these spaces in their libraries, and I would appreciate any advice you can offer.

    Regards

    John

    John,
Recording studio would be a hit IF programmed, designed, constructed, and furnished as an adaptable space. Why? One of the primary user groups of the space and they are ever-changing - both literally and figuratively. What is "in" this year may be forgotten two/three years down road. Be sure and get input from both teens and musicians during your community engagement phase of the project.

Gathering spaces are critical. They can vary from 4- and 6-seat group study rooms to conference rooms seating from 10 to 20 plus some side chairs. These rooms need to visually quite open and acoustically top of the line.  A multi-purpose Meeting room is extremely important. A flat floor space with very good stackable chairs. How many seats. A minimum of 120 to a maximum of 200.
