Angela Kinney, Chief, African, Latin American & Western European Division, Acquisitions and Bibliographic Access Directorate, Library of Congress, will present a report on copy cataloging at the Library of Congress.
Peter J. Rolla, Assistant Professor, Catalog Librarian, University of Colorado at Boulder Libraries and James P. Ascher, Assistant Professor and Rare Book Cataloger, University of Colorado at Boulder Libraries will talk about training all levels of staff for FRBR and FRAD, including copy catalogers, as a foundation for RDA and other next generation cataloging tools, “With Strings Attached: Training FRBR and FRAD via Simulation and Play”:
With the implementation of RDA on the horizon, the Cataloging and Metadata Services department at the University of Colorado, Boulder have set up a novel and effective program to engage all the cataloging staff, including copy catalogers, with FRBR and FRAD. First, an interactive digress.it blog enabled a group close reading of the texts with commentaries and lively discussions. Next, hands-on simulations had small groups working together with hundreds of strings of different colored yarn and every work in the library with "Don Quixote" somewhere in the description. Lastly, the entire activity was debriefed to build consensus about how these next-gen tools will be implemented, and explore the issues that developed in using the models for actual cataloging. The notes from the debriefing form a list of some of the major issues that will be faced in implementing new tools at this library, and the group consensus makes communication and collaboration easier. This presentation will describe in greater detail our training methods, whose underlying principles can be easily extended to other concepts as well.
Irina Kandarasheva, Copy Cataloging Unit Librarian, Columbia University Libraries, will do a presentation on “Two Aspects of Cooperative Cataloging: PCC Training for Paraprofessionals and Vendor Records’ Impact on Processing”:
The Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) training program has a long and successful history at Columbia University Libraries. One little known aspect of it is training paraprofessional staff to catalog certain categories of material to PCC level and create name and uniform title authority records (NARs). This presentation will describe the training process and the benefits of the contributions of copy catalogers with specialized languages to the program.
A different objective we collectively face in copy cataloging is the maximal optimization of our use of vendor supplied records. Nowadays, vendors are offering institutions different flavors and levels of cataloging which have significant impact on copy cataloging processing and workflows. This presentation will address the challenges of dealing with these varied quality records and also accepting/purchasing records from new vendors.
