HVAC Design - duct placement

     Hi All,

We're in the late predesign/early design phases for a new high-density remote storage facility.   The proposed facility would have static, 32-foot high shelves. Last week, we received a question about placement of ducts -- specifically, if it was necessary to have supply and returns in each aisle, or if it would be feasible to locate them at each end of the building if the temperature/RH could be maintained.    (The cost savings for the latter would be substantial.)

Our initial response was a strong "no," with the assumption that this could lead to issues related to microclimates, amongst other things.
I'm curious though -- do any of you have a  layout with ducts located at the end of the building, and if so, have you experienced issues?   More generally, I'm curious about air return placement for those of you in high density facilities  (such as whether the ductwork is located in the stacks), and what pros and cons you've experienced.

Thanks in advance for sharing your expertise.

    Best, Mary
