Making in Libraries: Starting, Managing, and Promoting Maker Services

The rapid growth of library makerspace services present both challenges and opportunities for all libraries and their users. There are many considerations for libraries as they plan and manage maker services, from how to get started, to managing and growing existing services, to developing maker programming. Connecting with others in the library makerspace community can be extremely helpful as we navigate this new and evolving area of library services. This Core e-forum will provide an opportunity for library makerspace organizers to share their successes and challenges, post questions related to makerspace development or management, and learn about the latest developments in makerspace technology.
Moderators
Cara Kouse is the Innovation and Makerspace Manager at Greene County Public Library in Ohio. Cara has degrees in Mathematics, Computer Science, and a Masters in Library and Information Science. She has worked in academic and public libraries during her career, working in branch management prior to starting at GCPL in 2016. Cara created the makerspace department, built out the makerspace, and has since been running and growing the makerspace and maker programming.
After several years as a makerspace librarian at Pikes Peak Library District in Colorado, Sarah Nagle moved to Miami University in 2018, where she serves as Creation and Innovation Services Librarian. Sarah planned and opened a new makerspace at Miami in 2019. She supports maker learning and innovation topics through events, instruction, and outreach. Her research interests include maker/creative spaces in academic libraries and maker-centered learning theory.
Leanne Nay is the Digital Engagement Librarian at Indiana University where she manages the Wells Library Makerspace. Her research focuses on gender imbalance in makerspaces and creating mobile makerspaces.
Amy Vecchione works at Boise State University as an associate professor and head of the Emerging Technologies and Experiential Learning Unit in Albertsons Library. The MakerLab provides access to technologies, as well as coaching and instruction on those technologies. She has written on makerspaces and emerging issues in academic libraries since 2009.
What Is an e-Forum?
A Core e-forum provides an opportunity for librarians to discuss matters of interest, led by a moderator, through the e-forum discussion list. The e-Forum discussion list works like an email listserv: register your email address with the list, and then you will receive messages and communicate with other participants through an email discussion. Most e-forums last two days. Registration on the list is necessary to participate, but it's free.
