Wikibase, Docker, and You: Getting started with a local Wikibase instance

Instructor: Jim Hahn, Head of Metadata Research, University of Pennsylvania

Abstract: This session will provide a general introduction to getting Wikibase -- the software that powers Wikidata -- up and running on your local desktop/laptop running Docker. Session leader will demo using Docker Desktop for Mac, though installation is possible on Docker Desktop for Windows and Linux Docker Engine-Community (https://docs.docker.com/get-docker/ ).

The session includes a simple introduction to using Docker on your desktop, followed by a necessary (though not overly technical) delineation of the technology stack that makes up Wikibase.

After we have walked through the installation steps, the last half of the hour will be reserved for independent work, question and answer time, and general troubleshooting for your newly installed Wikibase instance!

About the LD4 Wikibase Working Hour

The LD4 Wikibase Working Hour seeks to create a space for GLAM professionals experimenting with Wikibase/WBStack implementation, the software that Wikidata is based on, to learn collaboratively and share tips, tools, and resources.  For more details, see the project page.  To sign up for monthly announcements, please fill out this form.
