Storage Location ID field in Alma

  • 1.  Storage Location ID field in Alma

    Hi everyone,

At ASU Library, we use the Storage Location ID field in Alma and have run into a problem. Fortunately, there is a solution and we'd like to ask for the help of other Alma institutions in voting for our post in IDEA Exchange. Here's the post: https://ideas.exlibrisgroup.com/forums/308173-alma/suggestions/44245440-prevent-duplicate-storage-location-ids

Brief explainer: Often, when we need new item records for added volumes it is best to duplicate an existing item record and then modify it. Fields like the barcode are treated as unique within Alma and not copied. However, this "unique" treatment isn't available for the Storage Location ID field, which means that it is possible to accidentally duplicate this field, creating dozens of identical storage 'barcodes' in Alma that do not match what is on the shelf.

Our fantastic Technology Services team has created a set of workarounds that help to prevent the most common sources of duplication, and created reports in Alma Analytics to clean up previous errors. Still, we think it would be great to have a feature in Alma that would allow institutions to decide if the Storage Location ID field should be unique within the local system.

If you're willing to upvote our proposal or share this with your systems colleagues, that will help us move this enhancement request up in the priority list!

    Thanks for considering,
