Position Available: The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. This is a 100%, twelve-month, tenure-system appointment. Rank will be appropriate to the qualifications of the candidate selected, at a level of either Associate Professor or Professor.
Duties and Responsibilities: The University of Illinois is seeking a dynamic and visionary candidate with excellent leadership and interpersonal skills to lead the University of Illinois Rare Book and Manuscript Library. The ideal candidate will have a passion for rare books and special collections and the ability to take initiative to develop and lead projects collaboratively both within the university community and beyond. The head will have a compelling vision of how to make the collections known, accessible, and used through print, exhibition, and digital means and by engaging in and promoting scholarship on materials in the collections.
The Juanita J. and Robert E. Simpson Chair and Head of the Rare Book and Manuscript Library reports to the Associate Dean for Collections and Technical Services. The incumbent works in cooperation with the University Library Office of Advancement and Public Affairs and with the University of Illinois Library Friends in fund raising efforts and in promotion of the collections. The incumbent also collaborates closely with other members the Special Collections Division and Preservation Services, in facilitating and supporting projects related to shared concerns.
Specific Responsibilities Include:
● Establishing a continuing mission and strategic directions for a preeminent rare book and manuscript program
● Leading the Rare Book and Manuscript Library’s rich instructional and public outreach efforts including, but not limited to exhibits, lectures, symposia, conferences and digital engagement
● Expanding visibility and use of collections through innovative access methods and projects
● Collaborating with other Library programs and individuals, as well as campus and community partners, including the University of Illinois’ School of Information.
● Steering collection management efforts including but not limited to collection development, maintenance, preservation/conservation, facilities, and security concerns in the unit
● Supervising four professional and two civil service staff, with indirect supervision of graduate assistants and hourly workers (approximately 3 FTE), volunteers, and additional staff as funding allows

The Rare Book & Manuscript Library of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is one of the largest repositories for rare books and manuscripts in the United States. The collections - nearly half a million volumes and three kilometers of manuscript material - are strong in the broad areas of literature, history, art, theology, philosophy, technology, and the natural sciences. Particular strengths lie in early printing (1200 incunabula) and imprints from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, with English literature, works by Shakespeare, various important editions of the Bible, and Renaissance school books standing out as distinctive and deep collections. Also noteworthy are collections in the history of science and technology and the history of economics. The Library is renowned for its collection of emblem books and for its extensive holdings of works by and about John Milton. A special emphasis of the Library's collections is drama, from neo-Latin plays to Italian baroque drama, to Elizabethan and Jacobean playbooks, to twentieth-century set and costume design. Significant resources for northern Italian history can be found in the Cavagna Collection, which includes material from the twelfth to the twentieth century. The Spanish Golden Age collection includes more than 1,200 volumes dating from 1472 to 1700 and comprises not only Spanish literature, but also religion, law, politics, medicine, and astronomy. Finally, modern literary archival material housed in The Rare Book & Manuscript Library include the papers of Gwendolyn Brooks, H.G. Wells, Carl Sandburg, and W.S. Merwin; letters of Marcel Proust; and manuscript collections associated with such figures as Anthony Trollope, John Ruskin, Grant Richards, William Allingham, Richard Bentley, Benjamin Disraeli, Lewis Carroll, and John Richardson, among others. ● Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible professional experience in rare books or special collections in a university or research library
● Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited school of Library or Information Science, or a doctorate in a relevant field of study
● Excellent written and oral communication skills and proven record of collaboration within and/or outside the field of special collections
● Recognized national standing in rare book and special collections librarianship or a related field, as evidenced by leadership positions in professional organizations, awards, publications, or other relevant criteria
● Experience providing broad access to collections through education, public programming, and/or engagement, such as teaching with special collections, curating exhibits, organizing public events, digitization and digital outreach etc.
● Demonstrated familiarity with rare book and archival standards
● Experience working with donors and/or foundations
● Demonstrated supervisory experience as evidenced through increasing management responsibility, illustrating potential to supervise and mentor a diverse workforce including junior faculty
● Reading knowledge of one or more languages other than English
● Evidence of research and scholarship sufficient to meet university standards for a tenured faculty appointment
● Master's degree in Library Science and a Master’s or doctorate in a relevant academic field of study.
● Demonstrated success at securing external funding through gifts and grants
● Evidence of administrative acumen
● Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with staff as well as with campus faculty, students, and donors
● Demonstrated success in developing and managing complex projects
● Proven experience in management of special collections including, but not limited to, collection development, cataloging and description, preservation/conservation, facilities, and security
● Demonstrated understanding of issues related to the collection and curation of digital rare book and manuscript resources
● Working knowledge of one or more Western European or classical languages
Salary and Rank and Honorific Title: Librarians have faculty rank. Salary is competitive and is commensurate with experience and credentials for appointment at the Professor level. Tenure and appointment as Associate Professor may be considered, dependent on qualifications and experience and perceived ability for candidates to be promoted to the rank of Full Professor. Librarians are faculty and must demonstrate excellence in librarianship, research, publication and university/professional/community service in order to meet university standards for promotion and tenure.
For those candidates meeting campus requirements for appointment as full professor, this position also carries the potential for appointment as a named chair. The successful candidate may also receive an appointment as the “Juanita J. and Robert E. Simpson Professor”. Appointment to this named position will be made in accordance with campus procedures for appointment of named positions. Such named positions carry an additional salary stipend as well as discretionary funding to be used by the candidate to support their professional activities or those of the unit. For candidates meeting requirements for appointment as associate professor, appointment as a named chair will only be pursued after the candidate has achieved promotion to the rank of full professor, in accordance with University policies.
Terms of Appointment: Twelve-month appointment; 24 annual vacation days; 11 annual paid holidays; 12 annual sick-leave days (cumulative), plus an additional 13 sick-leave days (non-cumulative) available, if needed, each year; health insurance requiring a small co-payment is provided to employee (with the option to purchase coverage for spouse and dependents); required participation in State Universities Retirement System (SURS) (8% of annual salary is withheld and is refundable upon termination), with several options for participation in additional retirement plans; newly-hired employees are covered by the Medicare portion of Social Security and are subject to its deduction.
