ALA Council

i like have 3, in addition to the Chapter Councilors forum and the caucuses. It gives more opportunity for Councilors to meet and discuss. If a particular person needs to miss a meeting, it's better to miss 1 of 3 than 1 of 2.

I've long thought it would be good for there to be a forum outside of the evening times.  Yes, day times conflict with programs and meetings, but evenings take us away from the social aspect to conferences.  Why not have a breakfast forum, though, or at another point in the day?  Surely I'm not the only morning person on Council!

I would be open to a morning or afternoon forum. 

I like the Forum schedule as it currently stands.  However, I would be happy to accommodate the wishes of the majority.

Meeting three evenings in a row is a bit difficult, but I'm opening to continuing if other times are too hard to arrange.

Thanks, Samantha. For those who may not know, going to fora is voluntary and councilors are not mandated to go to all three. That said, it is still a good idea to go, especially for new councilors.

i think that it is more likely that councillors will miss forum if switched to mornings or afternoons. I have most of my meetings in the AM. That said I am fine with it alternating.

As someone who has spent more time going to Fora as a non-Councilor to get feedback, it's helpful to have time between a forum and a Council session to incorporate that feedback into whatever document or initiative is being proposed, so I'd hesitate to have them back-to-back.

I agree with keeping the three Council fora and am also open to the possibility of breakfast/day fora.

I prefer the current schedule. I personally have the majority of meetings in the morning and afternoon. I am able to attend evening Fora best. I understand that there are social engagements for other councilors, though. If we move one to morning/afternoon there is a possibility that some of us who go to all three in the evening would miss that 1/3. I also agree with Martin, that those who have submitted items need to to process and edit.

I like the idea of the Forum early in the conference. It is a great place to gain better understanding of an issue and to help those bring forth a resolution to get feedback to help improve it.

One of the emails about this poll suggested notes at Fora to bring the conversation to the record. While I appreciate that something along those lines could enter into the record some of the conversation about issues, I beg all of us to remember that Fora are NOT official meetings of ALA's governing body. If we are going to be a transparent organization, then I would like to see us have the conversations during the official meetings that are transcribed and recorded.

What I'm saying is:  1. I like the additional, earlier forum.  2. I'd also appreciate one at alternate times, and 3. Please remember that forum is NOT a council meeting and decisions should not be made there.

I also like the idea of having a forum that is not just at 8-10 pm. It conflicts many times with networking or dinner activities.

I like the three forums.  But I find it difficult to attend sometimes because of logistics such as other events (as mentioned already) and the location of the forum.  When it is held so far away from other hotels, and is so late by the time I get back to my hotel, it really makes it hard to attend.  I'm too cheap to get a taxi but find out I really pay for it with the extra walking.  

Presently, there is good attendance and passionate participation.

Many sacrifices are apparent.  

How will change guarantee improvement?

Nevertheless, I would be willing to try changes by majority decision.

To clarify, we are not talking about changing anything at the moment. The current question is whether or not we want to continue Saturday evening fora.

People have taken the liberty to also discuss other options, but that's not what we're voting on. This is just if we want to keep the additional forum on Saturday night.
