  • 1.  Codification and Future Status of LibLearnX versus "Midwinter":

    Dear Council colleagues,

     

    In the Constitution and Bylaws Committee report presented at Council 2 I made reference to codification of LibLearnX discussions between Conference Services, ALA Governance Staff, Conference, Policy Monitoring, and Constitution & Bylaws Committees. One of the committee members suggested  we post the minutes of the meeting for your perusal (see attachment). The positive outcome is that we can all look forward to further transparency and especially assessment of LLX, an inspirational albeit pilot event. Please pardon the odd precedent of posting a joint committee  summary  in the Council Connect space.  – Mike

    Thank you very much for this Mike. I'm very excited for the potential for LLX, and the positive effect of not having governance/committee meetings at the same time as attractive programming.

    I really would like to continue to push for clarity in terms of knowing what event we're attending when we go to Council meetings in January. Is that still Midwinter but we just don't call it that? I'd like us to find a way to communicate this change to members so that it seems like what it is, a change, and likely a positive one, and not just a confusion point, especially for newer librarians who maybe vaguely knew about Midwinter but didn't know that LibLearnX was taking place at the same, or almost the same time.

    +5 Jessamyn. Differentiation will be important as the meeting currently held in January has had a specific name (and, formerly, purpose) for decades.

    The redesigned, member-focused, professional development and awards event in January, to me, is emphatically not about "ALA governance" and is completely about providing a more-flexibly located, member-centric, education-focused event for members, library personnel, and library-adjacent people and organizations.

    As a proponent for the lowercase use of "midwinter," I appreciate how the Bylaws describe the meeting that is not held during the Annual Conference. I tend to think of the Council meeting "not less than three months before the next annual conference" as the (lower case) midwinter meeting of Council. 
    Also, I hope the "midwinter meeting of Council" continues as a remote attendance meeting. ;)
