  • 1.  LGBTQIA library info for capstone paper

    Posted Jul 08, 2019 02:23 PM
    Hi, all!

I am finishing up my capstone paper this semester and it is on racial, sexual, and multilingual diversity in the library. I had tried to specifically focus on public libraries' staff. However, that narrow focus has been hindering me, especially when it comes to sexual and multilingual diversity. I have found some info on male vs. female, but not much on other/intersexual diversity. I have also wished to find more information about multilingual diversity among library staff. My professor suggested looking at the Social Responsibilities and LGBTQ round tables for input and resources, perhaps even just vision/mission statements. We discussed as well searching public administration laws regarding service in public sectors and such. Do you all have any resource ideas or input?

    Thank you,

This may not be soon enough to help you, but there's a book coming out in September - Supporting Trans People in Libraries (Krueger) - that may have some helpful information? The author also has some resources on their website: https://www.stephengkrueger.com/trans-resources. These are primarily focused on transgender and non-binary issues, but may still be useful to you.

I want to thank everyone for all the resources you sent my way! They are helping. I'm just trying to push through to get this capstone paper done and presented by the end of next week!

    Hi Andrea,

You might also take a look at "Out Behind the Desk".  I know ALA has the GLBT Roudtable and there is a separate Facebook group for LGBTQ Librarianship.

Best of luck with your capstone and beyond!

The Women and Gender Studies Section of ACRL maintains a bibliography of information about women and gender in relation to libraries. The bibliography includes public library information even though WGSS is part of ACRL. There is one section of it that looks at LGBTQ specifically but that focuses on services to LGBTQ. There is another section called Feminism and Librarianship and there is a sub-category in that of Gender, Race, and Sexuality in the LIS Profession. Perhaps some of these articles will help you. The URL for this section of the bibliography is https://acrl.ala.org/wgss/resources/bibliographymain/bibfemlib/. If you publish something from your research, let me know and I'll make sure it gets added to this bibliography.

    Hope this helps!
