  • 1.  Unique 5 digit barcode start

    Posted Jun 21, 2021 01:12 PM
I'm a retired public service librarian (AKA not a techie) helping a city transition to becoming independent.  Rebarcoding the collection and new library cards are required.  I did this 3 years ago and when I finally tracked down a source for the 5 digit barcode start, I was told that I was receiving the last one from the "Registry".  Vendors will not help with this.  I'd rather not make up a number when there's a probable source.

Thanks for the link.  I need a source that assigns the 5 digit unique number.  I didn't see any link to that information but they have an interesting barcode 101 discussion.

The last time I needed a barcode prefix, I went through Infor - infor.com. They were still providing them around this time last year.

I will try Infor.  I think they directed me to the National Registry three years ago and they said they gave me the last available prefix.  It sounds like they found some extras lying around.  Thanks for the help.

Are you looking for something like this, where each library gets assigned a four digit number.  Then the first digit of a barcode tells patron (2) or item (3) and the next four digits tell the library?

I've never gotten a number assigned to a library, but would suggest contacting your state library or the library system to which you belong.  I think each state may be organized differently.

Good luck!  I'd be curious what the answer is when you discover it.

We have recently done this change ourselves and ours was done using the 2 indicator for patron and the last 4-digits of our zip code as our unique identifier.

It is working well and is easy to remember.

I like this option.  I've asked the consortia for a list of barcode starts to prevent any problems.  I'll call Infor as well.  Great solution.

I wish there was one comprehensive barcode list, with a unique prefix for each library. Unfortunately that is not quite the case, although several libraries in the past have "registered" for a number. The "list" has always been kept in "log" that is not online. I think it finally moved from paper to Excel but I am not sure that is even still in use. Here are a couple of links for more info:
