Hey all,
A reminder that tomorrow will be the second session below. Unlike the other sessions, these are not recorded. This is for two reasons: 1) After the introduction, we go into breakout rooms for small group discussion, and 2) we hope that by not recording it will help encourage open and honest discussion. We had a great session last week, and I know we will tomorrow. I hope you will plan to join us, especially if you missed last week.
Thanks!
Rodney

The following message is sent on behalf of American Library Association President Julius C. Jefferson, Jr.
This Session is for current ALA Councilors and Newly-Elected Councilors only.
Dear Councilors,
Please mark your calendars and join us for this year's special Tune In Tuesday: Council Orientation Web Event, titled: Disrupting Microaggressions: Engaging in Effective Actions. You will have the opportunity to select one of two dates, Tuesday, June 15th or Tuesday, June 22nd (4:00-5:30 p.m. EST). These sessions are envisioned and sponsored by ALA President Julius C. Jefferson, Jr. and coordinated by the Office for Diversity, Literacy and Outreach Services. Alanna Aiko Moore will present on microaggressions and strategies for responding to them, and facilitators will lead breakout conversations based on scenarios.
Alanna Aiko Moore is the Librarian for Sociology, Ethnic Studies, and Critical Gender Studies at University of California, San Diego, a position she has held for 14 years. Alanna brings a deep commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and social justice and extensive experience working in a variety of settings. Alanna is a 2003 Spectrum Scholar and the Immediate Past President of the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association (APALA). Within ALA, she has served on the Steering Committee for Organizational Effectiveness, the Task Force for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, and has chaired the Committee on Diversity. Prior to librarianship, she worked at social justice centered non-profits and community organizations.
DESCRIPTION: The effects of microaggressions are well documented. For those who experience them, microaggressions tend to create a hostile and invalidating climate. Not as well known or applied are the skills needed to intervene when microaggressions take place, particularly in ways that maintain relationships with patrons and colleagues. This interactive session will focus not just on microaggressions and bystander intervention but also explore how library workers may also perpetuate or be targets of microaggressions. Participants will explore personal experience scenarios and intervention strategies from various perspectives, including perpetrator, witness/bystander, and target.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Examine how microaggressions persist in LIS
- Strategize ways to respond to microaggressions in real time
- Explore how intervention strategies in common workplace scenarios may differ based on role
