  • 1.  Original RDA relationship designator "progenitor"

    Posted Sep 29, 2021 01:31 PM
Am I missing it, or is there no new RDA equivalent relationship property for the original RDA relationship designator "progenitor"?

    K.2.2

family member: A person who is a member of a family.
    Reciprocal relationship: family.

progenitor: A person from whom a family is descended.
        Reciprocal relationship: descendants.

Is the only RDA relationship element the broader element person member of family?  Or perhaps prominent member of family?
It looks like we have lost the more specific concept of a progenitor?

I've been assuming it's "Descendant family of person of". Which is thankfully a vast improvement over "progenitor"

    Bob,

You're right, I missed that.  The definition matches, so yes that's the one I was looking for.

    Thanks,
    Adam

P.S.  Why can't it simply be "progenitor" and perhaps the reciprocal be "progenitor of"?

And now, I need to find what "descendant family of person of" (i.e., progenitor) is in the RDA unconstrained properties.  Is it "has prominent member of agent" or the even broader "has member"?

The RSC Secretary, Linda Barnhart, reminded me that there is a mapping from constrained to unconstrained properties in the RDA Registry: https://www.rdaregistry.info/Maps/mapRDA2Unc.html

So, the unconstrained version of "descendant family of person of" is "has predecessor" (http://rdaregistry.info/Elements/u/P60683).

Thanks once again for reminding me of this mapping, Linda!
