Workflows

Apologies if this has been asked before - I'm sure it must have been, but I can't find it - is there any prospect of Global Workflows, as in the old Toolkit, re-appearing in the new one? All I can find are stub-like Policy statements from BL and Loc. Perhaps the "globalness" has been deprecated by the emphasis on communities, but they were a really useful resource.

The Documents feature in the new Toolkit "allows users to create documents that can be used privately or shared locally or globally. The document categories are Workflow, Map, Local Policy (not the same as Policies), Training Material, and Reference. These are suggestions; users are not restricted to only these document types."

    Thanks, Kathy
Iwas actually hoping for something more akin to "British Library monograph workflow", or "Solent University RDA/MARC workflow for print books" or even "RDA 201: Simple book", from the Tools/Workflows/Global Workflows of the original toolkit.

    Alan

I believe the intent is that documents like that can be shared globally as Kathy described, just as those in the previous version of the toolkit.  Someone just needs to write them, which has not happened yet.

My guess is that as soon as someone creates a workflow document, it will appear in the Toolkit. But at this point, I'm not sure there are really any practitioners who quite understand (yet) exactly how the new guidelines are going to be used in "the real world". ;)

As you can imagine, it makes teaching a bit ... hypothetical ...

At the moment, it is indeed mostly hypothetical.  Almost no one is actually using the new RDA Toolkit for active cataloging.  The Library of Congress and PCC are still working on policy statements and workflows for the new Toolkit.  They have not yet set a date for adoption of the new Toolkit.  In the meantime, PCC libraries, and those who follow PCC practices, are still using the old Toolkit.

The PCC Policy Committee has said that PCC will not be implementing the new RDA Toolkit before July 2022. It is my understanding that LC would prefer to train their catalogers in the new RDA using BIBFRAME and not MARC, and this will take some time to do that and create the application profiles for BIBFRAME.

From the same URL in my last message, the document: RDA Beta Toolkit Project: Joint LC/PCC Effort, states that training in the new Toolkit will not start before fall 2021, and possibly later, so it will be some time before LC & PCC adopt the new Toolkit RDA.
