This space is for all those interested in updates and discussion regarding Transforming ALA Governance. This space was originally created to share the work of the Steering Committee on Organizational Effectiveness (SCOE) who was charged in June 2018 to carry out a comprehensive review and study of ALA’s governance, member participation and legal structures and systems, with the goal of proposing changes that will vitalize its success, strength and agility as a 21st century association. The results of this committee are the Forward Together recommendations.

    Hi Folks!

There were many requests from members for a super simple, bare bones overview of the SCOE Preliminary Recommendations comparing what we have now, vs. what we may have based upon the recommendations in their current state. I put forth such a document with the strong caveat that this is, indeed, an extremely bare bones overview and I invite you to view the full slide deck or listen to one of our virtual input sessions for further clarification and understanding.

Just a reminder that these are preliminary recommendations, this document is the simplest possible explanation and lacks all detail and nuance, and is intended to be viewed along with the full slide deck.

Another reminder that we are currently soliciting input and feedback and no input or feedback has yet been integrated into the recommendations. SCOE members are meeting in August and September to begin analyzing and incorporating feedback and we hope to have refined and revised recommendations to everyone by Midwinter 2020.

As always, please let us know what you like and suggestions for improvement on areas of concern.

    All the best,

What does "Adopt the same dues structure" (under round table) mean? That all RT have the same dues?

SRRT is also concerned about this as we have an International member category which we do want to give up.

    Hi Susanne!

Yes, that would mean that RTs all have the same dues structure. Initially we envisioned one Round Tables dues category only, but categories like International Memberships (as Charles mentions below) and Student Memberships were brought up during out input sessions to SCOE. The committee will be discussing what possibilities we might be able to recommend when we meet in a few weeks.

The rationale behind this recommendation was to make it easier for members to understand and identify the financial expectations of joining a Round Table and potential implications will also be part of the larger fiscal analysis being conducted over the next few months.

    Hope that helps!

Thank you for your reply! There is a significant difference between a dues structure and the dues that each RT charges? It sounds like this is just structural with each RT offering regular, student, corporate/organization, and international rates?

If this extends to the amount each RT charges in dues, that is a different, and more problematic issue. GODORT's dues are $20.00 for regular members, less for students. We want to keep membership affordable. I know of one RT, the Staff Organizations Round Table, which charges $3.00 for dues and probably for the same reason.

Thank you, Susanne for your comments and the examples. Definitely something for us to take into consideration as we work on the recommendations.

I do not see how the SCOE recommendations, which seems to slash the representation of members by reducing opportunities to participate, can contribute to equity, diversity and inclusion.  I suggest we keep council, reduce the at-large membership by half, let current members finish their terms til this is accomplished, then start elections again with an emphasis on recruiting EDI candidates for at-large positions.  Keep all the current representatives of ALA units which provides broad member input into the policy and operation of ALA.

I agree with Nancy.  The change is draconian and I don't see its value.
