Posting on behalf of Booklist - looking for contributors for their next special edition issue focusing on Comics & Graphic Novels!

Last year, Booklist published the Guide to Graphic Novels in Libraries, which we mailed with our July issue and distributed at a variety of conferences. We published articles about graphic medicine, mini-cons, comics and GN readers' advisory for kids, collecting manga, cataloging, and more. It was so well received that we're doing it again this year, and we'd like your help. We're in search of submissions from library workers working with comics and graphic novels, in a variety of capacities, to either contribute original articles or be interviewed by a Booklist editor about your work in the field.
We're happy to hear pitches on anything pertinent to comics and graphic novels in libraries, but we're particularly interested in the following topics:
- Webcomics and nontraditional materials, such as zines, self-published comics, etc. Why are they important to collect? How do you go about collecting them or using them?
- Readers' Advisory tips (or making a case for) using GNs with kids who have learning differences, such as dyslexia or ADHD
- Comics in the classroom (college too!)
- How to handle a GN book challenge, and what (if anything) makes a GN book challenge unique
- Decolonizing your GN and comics collections
- Collection management for superhero comics
- Programming success stories
- Readers' Advisory for graphic novel skeptics
- How to get a cartoonist to come to your library/the benefits of bringing a cartoonist to your library
We're looking for articles to run approximately 1200-2000 words, and the starting rate for contributors who submit original articles is $150.
If you'd like to contribute or would like to participate in an interview, here's what we need from you:
- A brief description of your work and where you're a librarian
- An abstract or synopsis of your proposed article
- Links to any published writing and/or a short writing sample
Please send all pitches to both Sarah Hunter (Shunter@ala.org) and Susan Maguire (Smaguire@ala.org) no later than January 8th. Articles won't actually be due until late March, but we'd like to make our selections as early as possible.
