ALCTS LLAMA LITA Alignment Discussion

  • 1.  What will this division be called?

While vision and values statements are important, few people actually read them.?? Everyone in ALA will read the name of this new division.?? The name of the division will have far more impact on how most people perceive it, and what it actually becomes.

That said, who is going to pick the name??? What will be the process??? I want to see a very open democratic process.

That's a great question, Lloyd, and the answer at the moment is "We don't know!"

The project steering committee has been discussing this very issue over the last few weeks, and we all completely agree with you that having a name -- even if isn't perfect to start with -- is a critical component to moving a new division forward. We have talked about how the suggestion and selection process for a new name could work, as well as identified some of the different factors that will play a part in making that choice:
    • Balancing the need for member input with wanting to avoid a "Division McDivisionFace" situation
    • Creating a name that has meaning without locking us into something that doesn't allow for future growth and development
    • Avoiding similar names already in use by other organizations
We will be moving forward with a process in the next month or two, and will keep everyone posted as we hammer out the details.
