Part of the discussion about possibly creating a new ALA division is coming up with a name. The project Steering Committee has looked at it theoretically. Now we need your practical help.

    How can you participate?

    • To give us your preference among name suggestions, or to add new ideas, go to http://www.allourideas.org/newdivisionname.
    • To share your thoughts about our naming goals or provide feedback in complete sentences, add your voice to this discussion thread.

What are we trying to accomplish?

    • We don't want the typical division acronym. We're creating something new and we want to symbolically break with the old ways in our new name.
    • Our name needs to give us room for growth, so a list of our current functional domains won't do the trick -- we may continue to morph and change.
    • We want our name to be inspiring. That may mean a conceptual approach to a name that we can balance out with a more concrete mission statement (still in progress).
    • We aren't voting. Voting means winners and losers, and we're trying to build solidarity, not competition. (We also don't want to end up with "Division McDivisionFace.")

    Who decides?

The project Steering Committee, made up of leadership of each of the three divisions, will make the final decision. In addition to considering member input and feedback, we also need to run any potential new name through a vetting process to make sure we aren't violating any trademarks.

    What's next?

The poll will be open through Wednesday, December 12. After that, the Steering Committee will review the names and discuss the possibilities. Our intention is to announce the new division name before ALA Midwinter in January 2019.

    ACK!

With apologies, the correct link for the name poll should be http://www.allourideas.org/newdivisionname

Is there a way to see all division name suggestions at once?  I don't like the "run-off" style display. I feel as though I'm over-voting for marginal ideas.  How long does it take for suggestions to become part of the voting options?  Thanks.

I agree with Susan! Every time I look at the link there are two different names there, and I don't see a way to see ALL of the options that have been suggested.

The AllOurIdeas tool was built for paired-choice input around an algorithm that takes a number of factors into account when returning results, including how early or late in the process a choice was added to the survey, and how many "at-bats" each pairing has had. It's a fascinating tool -- you can read more about it here: http://www.allourideas.org/about

The reason we chose this tool is because it's flexible enough to allow new ideas to be added to the mix while also providing a fun and non-competitive way for people to give their feedback. Don't overthink it! Just pull the trigger on each pair -- which do you like better?

As for how long it takes for new ideas to appear, they are being moderated, so there is a delay between adding an idea and having it be available for voting. The reason we're moderating ideas is that there isn't a lot of room on the AllOurIdeas page to provide specific instructions about where comments or questions should go, and we don't want the non-names that have been submitted to be part of the feedback process.

The survey will be open through Wednesday, December 12. Before then, we'll post a list of contenders here for more specific feedback.

I am getting distracted by the functionality of the poll. I spent several minutes responding to the pairs but they seemed never ending! I don't want to submit a response for a name I don't know or understand. I also will not select between two in pair for the same reason. Many of my responses were the small "I can't decide."  I really don't want a new name for the division to be selected based on the number of "lesser of two evils" clicks a word received.

The allourideas poll is fine once you get the hang of it, but I think the landing page should explain up front how it works -- it wasn't at all obvious at first. (Initially it seemed like the first two choices I saw were the only two choices in the poll.) It also isn't obvious that the poll doesn't stop on its own, you just stop when you choose to (although that is explained on the About page).
