    The USG is now accepting applications for a Conservator for the Georgia Archives. This is a supervisory position responsible for overseeing the Conservation Lab and collections care of the Georgia Archives. The position generally possesses authority to coordinate work, supervise and train staff, conduct preservation treatments, provide information and guidance, plan and conduct educational workshops and presentations.

    Description:  MAJOR DUTIES:



    • Supervise all functions and operations of Preservation Services, including Conservation Lab and staff;

    • Plan, perform, and document basic and complex conservation treatments for a broad range of materials including books, manuscripts, maps, prints, drawings and works on paper and make recommendations to public and private agencies as well as Archives patrons;

    • Collaborate with archivists and others to establish annual priorities for conservation;

    • Coordinate preventative care, including disaster preparedness and response, pest management, and environmental monitoring programs;

    • Collect and analyze data and recommend best practices for protecting and preserving the collections;

    • Assist in state emergency planning and response, including advising state and local institutions, maintaining GEMA ESF-11 designation, and participating in statewide initiatives for emergency preparedness;

    • Make recommendations for program budget;

    • Serve on internal committees related to primary job assignment;

    • Participate in appropriate professional and scholarly associations and organizations;

    • Maintain up-to-date professional knowledge and skills in areas related to primary duties as well as maintain general knowledge of current trends in higher education and information and educational technology;

    • Assist with installation of Archives exhibits including recommending protective exhibit practices;

    • Train Archives staff in conservation treatments to repair, reformat, and rehouse records;

    • Manage preservation grants, including application, funding, staff assignments, and reporting;

    • Manage conservation internship program;

    • Create and give presentations, workshops, training, and tours relating to duties.


    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:



    • A Master's degree in Conservation, Library Science (from ALA-accredited program), or related field with specialized training in conservation and at least two years of related experience in a conservation lab setting, including in the complex treatment of paper based collections or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    • One year of experience in supervision, including orienting and training employees, organizing workloads, delegating responsibility, providing guidance and direction, monitoring and evaluating performance, coaching and counseling, and taking disciplinary action as necessary.

    • Candidates selected for onsite interviews must provide a portfolio demonstrating complex conservation treatments on a wide range of book and paper materials.


     PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:



    • Five years of experience in preservation operations in a large archives including preservation reformatting and exhibit preparation.

    • Three years of experience in supervision.

    Minimum Hiring Salary: $67,125 (Commensurate with education and experience)
