  • 1.  Council Schedule for LibLearnX

    Posted Jul 15, 2021 10:23 AM
Greetings, I was wondering when the schedule for Council meetings during LibLearnX will be finalized?  I see on the LibLearnX site that meetings are scheduled for Council I and Council II only.  Will there be a Council III and, if so when will we know the schedule?  Will ALA/APA Council meet?  I know it's early but it would really be helpful to block out our Council time  commitments as soon as we can.  With Council starting on Thursday, staying through the whole conference will represent more of a cost than in the past and (as I guess you can tell) I'm working on budgets this week :).  Thanks for any information that can be provided.

    Great Discuss Eileen
Since Annual will be in my hometown in 2022 (DC), I am hoping to get money for LibLearnX.  Depending on the programming (which is why the library pays me to go), I might have to do Council 1 or Council III remotely to save money.

    Hello All!

I am a new CAL and am still trying to figure all of this out.  I wanted to jump in and ask whether it is required/expected of CAL to attend in person now that things are back in person? I just recently learned that my employer has cut prof dev/travel budgets by 75%, I will probably not be able to afford to attend in person conferences for the foreseeable future.  This is a reality that wasn't when I originally ran to be on Council.  I hope attending remotely is a possibility moving forward.

I will definitely be attending remotely as long as there are options to do it because the Vermont Chapter is small and sending me to ALA is their largest annual expense.

So I am looking forward to the schedule and am also hoping we can schedule the meetings at a more reasonable time for our colleagues in Hawai'i so that they don't have to get up at the crack of dawn if they are attending remotely. I believe that Council II started at 4 am for them (possibly 5) and I think we should avoid that if at all possible.

    Hi All,

Thanks for the questions! ALA Council Sessions I & II are scheduled to meet prior to LibLearnX on Thursday, January 20 and Friday, January 21 in San Antonio, TX. We will also be providing an option for Councilors to participate virtually if unable to attend in person. Governance staff will work with our Conference Services and AV support teams to find solutions to facilitate this new hybrid experience, but please note the virtual experience may differ from the on-site in person experience. Other governance events not listed in the schedule that are typically held around Midwinter time will be scheduled virtually. We will share those events and their meeting dates/times once finalized.

Please let us know if you have further questions. Thank you!

Thanks, Sheryl! So it sounds like Council III, if we have it, will be virtual?

Yes that is correct. Council III is planned to be held virtually.

I can't speak for my Hawaii colleagues but I can say that as a 49 year + Alaskan we often find ourselves with meetings EST and CST.  It is just a way of life.

I had one meeting at annual which started 4:30 am
