Well said, President Jefferson. Thank you for both your understanding of our impulses and your insistence on civility.

    Greetings Council,

I want to thank you all for the very productive meeting yesterday. We discussed and passed resolutions that will benefit our members, Libraries and library workers.

I want you to also know that it is my expectation that within the walls of Council and beyond our behavior must reflect the actions we pass as policy and that everyone will be treated with respect, kindness and decency. Of course, this also applies to our virtual environment. I expect us to always model behavior outlined in our statement of appropriate conduct, which seeks to create an, "environment of mutual human respect"

We cannot pass a resolution calling for broadband as a human right and then neglect to treat our colleagues, co-workers and those we serve as human.

In addition, I know and understand how stressful this very difficult moment we are all adjusting and living through affects us daily. I know there are moments when our passions and emotions guide us and we make comments that are not the best representation of ourselves or as members of this august body. When this happens, we must own our behavior and do better. I am pleased when we own how we may have made another feel.

I appreciate colleagues that took ownership of their behavior and apologized on this space.

I look forward to another engaging and productive meeting today.

    Onward and Upward,

    Julius C. Jefferson Jr.

    2020-2021 ALA President
