Meeting rooms for Midwinter: please respond by Sept. 1st!

  • 1.  Meeting rooms for Midwinter: please respond by Sept. 1st!

    Dear all:

In light of the reformatting of the ALA's Midwinter meeting, we're being asked if our committee needs to meet in person at Midwinter 2020 in Philadelphia. If we decide that an in person meeting is not necessary, then we will be able to schedule a virtual meeting for February 2020.

Please let the group know your preference – to meet virtually or in person – by next Thursday, August 29, so that I can respond to the ALCTS survey.

    Thanks,

    Nicole

Subject: Meeting rooms for Midwinter: please respond by Sept. 1st!

Dear ALCTS Cataloging and Metadata Management Section Committee Chairs:

As ALA as a whole plans substantial changes to the format of Midwinter meetings beginning in 2021, ALA divisions are approaching Midwinter 2020 in a variety of ways (likely the "last Midwinter as we know it"!). (LITA, for example, is not actively encouraging its members to attend Midwinter 2020).

At the Annual Conference last month, the ALCTS Board affirmed that it will meet in person at Midwinter 2020. We encourage each ALCTS division or section committee to consider whether they feel the need to meet in person at Midwinter. We anticipate that standards development committees (such as CC:DA) may want to meet in person at Midwinter 2020, but other committees may be able to carry out their activities online. Likewise, some Interest Group programs or discussions could be held virtually throughout the year.

ALA is likely to be moving into new office space in January 2020 as well and will be juggling competing priorities. Having accurate information regarding room scheduling will allow ALCTS staff to focus on supporting only those groups who want to meet in-person at Midwinter, As an ALCTS Chair, please discuss with your group members whether or not the group needs to meet in person in Philadelphia, and please fill out this survey by September 1st.

Once Midwinter 2020 has concluded and ALA staff is settled into their new offices, ALCTS staff will be available to schedule virtual events beginning in February 2020. Additional guidance in chairing or hosting virtual events will also be available to ALCTS and Section Chairs, and will be included in the upcoming virtual ALCTS Leaders Orientation to be scheduled this Fall.

Please contact Julie Reese at jreese@ala.org, the CaMMS Chair, Sandy Roe skroe@ilstu.edu or me if you have questions about this decision.

    Many thanks!

    Jennifer Bowen

    ALCTS President

I prefer to have a virtual meeting since I am unable to attend in person.

I personally prefer to meet in person, especially with new members coming on board.  However, I am not opposed to a virtual meeting, and will happily participate in such.  The advantage of in person is that we are all in one place at one time for the purpose of ALA meetings.  It is difficult to schedule virtual meetings with our membership having so many different demands on our time during our normal workweeks.

    Thanks for asking!

    ---Cynthia

I also appreciate seeing everyone, and I find in-person discussions to be more organic. Like Cynthia said however, I'm not opposed to meeting virtually.

I should note that even if we do decide on an in-person meeting, we can also set up a call-in feature, as we've done in the past, for those not able to attend.

Much appreciate a call-in option for those who won't be able to attend in person. Sadly in my case, I do not get travel funding support to attend ALA Midwinter meetings beyond attending Asian studies conference meetings.

    All best,

I am fine with either one, although I'm not sure that I will be able to receive funding for Midwinter (the response from the head of my department was not positive on that). I do prefer to meet in person, but perhaps if we schedule a virtual meeting well enough in advance attendance won't be a problem.

Thank you for providing the option.

    Hi all,

I share the same opinion as Cynthia. I think in-person meeting is the right kind of environment to learn from each other.  Also, I am planning to attend the next Midwinter, so I would prefer in-person meeting for CC:AAM. That said, I will be happy to participate virtually also.

    Thanks,

Hello all!  For the upcoming 2020 mid-winter, I am fine with either in-person or virtual CC:AAM meeting.  It would be nice to have an option of attending virtual CC:AAM meeting, in addition to attending in-person meeting.  With my current role, I also need to attend CC:DA meeting; I am not sure if CC:DA is also considering virtual meeting as an option. Thank you.  Jia

I personally found the discussion at the last meeting very enlightening, and I learned a lot from it.
I believe that meeting in person is always very effective, and preferable to a virtual meeting.
However, I would welcome any format: whatever works to achieve maximum participation.

    Thanks,
    lia

    Dear Nicole,

I have not made my decision on whether to attend the Midwinter in person.  For your polling purpose, please consider me to attend the meeting virtually if there is such option.

    Thank you.

As a new member, I would value the opportunity to meet in person and get to know everyone better. The added benefit of a physical meeting is those in attendance won't have to struggle with unreliable/disparate technologies (functioning webcams, microphones, network connectivities) that can interfere with both clarity and nuance of discussions.

An ideal space would accommodate physical attendees and also include sufficient technology to allow others to join virtually if they can. There will of course never be a good time to get a group of busy people together!

Thanks, everyone! Since the majority preferred meeting in person, I've gone ahead and indicated that we will be meeting at Midwinter. For those of you unable to attend, we'll work beforehand to get a conference call set up as we've done at previous meetings.
    Thanks,
    Nicole
