Virtual Presentation: Identifying and Reducing Potential Sources of Bias in the Promotion and Tenure Review of University Faculty by Dr. Cynthia Werner, Texas A & M University
The promotion and tenure process is central to all institutions of higher education, and there is an assumption that the review process is a fair and equitable one. This presentation identifies many different ways that bias can enter into the promotion and tenure review process, whether it's bias from external review letters, student evaluations of teaching, or metrics used to evaluate scholarly productivity. This presentation shares insights from an ADVANCE workshop on promotion and tenure, as well as a collaborate NSF research project on bias in the promotion and tenure review process.
Guest Speaker: Cynthia Werner is the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs in the College of Arts and Sciences & former Director of ADVANCE, Texas A & M University. Formerly, Dr. Werner was the director of Texas A&M's ADVANCE program, which strives to create a psychologically healthy workplace at Texas A&M where all faculty can thrive and succeed. A key objective of ADVANCE is to weave the values of diversity, inclusion, and respect into the culture of the institution.
