Charge: ACRL’s Library EDI Committees Discussion Group seeks to provide a forum for practitioners, especially members of Library Diversity committees, to discuss EDI topics in academic libraries, and share resources useful to library workers engaged in EDI initiatives in libraries. They plan to work to support both library workers who are thinking about starting a diversity initiative and diversity committees that are already established.

Making Space for Meaningful Storytelling: Lessons from StoryCorps

Presented by the American Library Association and StoryCorps

    Date & Time: December 11, 2024 3pm Central
    Duration: 90 minutes

Storytelling has the power to heal, inspire, and foster connections. In collaboration with StoryCorps, the American Library Association presents a transformative webinar that explores how libraries can become pivotal spaces for literacy, community well-being, and empowerment through the art of storytelling. This session is part of the larger initiative, Storytelling for Literacy and Community Healing: Empowering Libraries as Catalysts for Change, which equips libraries with the tools to support marginalized communities, including incarcerated individuals, using storytelling to create positive change. The initiative is generously funded by The Estée Lauder Companies' WRITING CHANGE initiative, which was established in partnership with poet, activist, and Estée Lauder Global Changemaker Amanda Gorman. WRITING CHANGE supports organizations, including ALA, that help to advance literacy as a pathway to equality, access, and social change.

     In this webinar, you will:

    •  Master Best Practices: Gain practical skills in deep listening and asking great questions-key components of effective storytelling.
    •  Discover Library Applications: Learn how libraries are using storytelling to engage their communities through real-life case studies. Get access to free StoryCorps resources that can help bring these ideas to life in your own library.
    •  Engage with a Community Panel: Hear from individuals who have been directly impacted by incarceration, as they discuss the importance of sharing their stories and reclaiming their narratives.
    •  Learn about StoryCorps: Discover the history, mission, and impact of StoryCorps, a nonprofit organization dedicated to recording and preserving personal stories. Explore the key elements of their conversational model and its potential in empowering communities.
