Virtual Academic Health Sciences Libraries Practicum, Spring 2025
The Library of the Health Sciences at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), the Health Sciences Library of Loyola University Chicago, and the Galter Health Sciences Library & Learning Center, Northwestern University, are co-sponsoring a virtual joint practicum for the Spring 2025 semester. This practicum is geared towards LIS graduate students currently enrolled in ALA-accredited programs who are interested in exploring health sciences librarianship. Recent MLIS graduates are also encouraged to apply. The collaboration provides the student with a supervised virtual experience working with librarians in three academic health sciences library settings, learning skills to be applied to their future careers.
The practicum student will gain health science library experience while integrating classroom theory into a working environment. The student will learn from librarians from different departments within each institution. Each of the libraries will integrate the student into the daily workflow, allowing the student to accompany and assist librarians while they perform reference duties, conduct instruction sessions, provide individual consultations, enhance metadata, and attend professional development programs.
During the practicum, students will be assigned projects that serve the needs of each library and the interest of the student. Students will be required to submit weekly written reflections and deliver a final presentation detailing the experience at the end of the semester. The three librarians will work with the student between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. during the spring semester. The student will spend approximately 100 to 120 hours between the libraries, depending on any requirements from the student's LIS program. While the focus of the training will be partly tailored to the interest of the student, it will be structured to include training that incorporates these experiences:
* Learning and utilizing core health sciences databases such as PubMed and CINAHL
* Working with patrons in virtual setting
* Developing or editing LibGuides
* Working with librarians who teach curriculum integrated instruction and /or library skills workshops
* Examining evidence-based health sciences and clinical practice literature
* Learning the process of systematic reviews
* Working with institutional repository metadata
* Revising and creating bibliographic records within OCLC Connexion and Alma
The Health Sciences Library of Loyola University Chicago is in Maywood, IL. The UIC Library of the Health Sciences and the Galter Health Sciences Library & Learning Center of Northwestern University are in Chicago. While these libraries are all located in the Chicagoland area, this practicum is designed to be completed entirely online. Depending on the location of the student, in-person site visits may be arranged.

Subject: Question - Similarities & Differences Between Academic Medical Libraries and Non-Academic Medical Libraries
Hi ACRL Health Sciences,
May I get an explanation/list of similarities and differences between academic medical libraries and non-academic medical libraries? I am still trying to figure this out.
