The role of Collection Development Librarian has been a rapidly evolving position as libraries shift more and more efforts towards electronic access, in some cases situating the role away from the Acquisitions Department. At our R1 institution, we did just that by establishing two Collection Development Librarian positions and seating them in the Reference Department. We continue to perform traditional collection development responsibilities such as selecting, managing, and evaluating the library collection, but our departmental positioning allows us to expand upon those duties to build engagement opportunities and creatively promote the collection. We connect patrons with materials outside of curriculum by curating and promoting recreational reading collections, engaging students in book display curation, establishing and running a book club, and proposing the creation of a student board for students to have a direct impact on collection development at our library. This work allows us not only to gather direct feedback from patrons about the library collections but also creates new opportunities for us to highlight how the collections can be enjoyed outside of curriculum. It creates a sense of ownership over the libraries for students, fostering community and belonging. In this presentation we will outline how we implemented these activities and balance them among more traditional collection development duties.
