Subcommittee for 2019 ALA Annual panel/presentation?

  • 1.  Subcommittee for 2019 ALA Annual panel/presentation?

    Posted Jul 13, 2018 10:34 AM

    Hi all,

It was great to see everyone at Annual and while I still have the momentum (again, that NOLA coffee, y'all!), wanted to reach out to see if there were people interested in beginning conversations and planning for doing something for the 2019 Annual Conference during our allotted Sat. afternoon slot.

We've worked so hard on the standards, implementing the framework, etc., that I'd think it'd be compelling to be proactive about doing something engaging that talks about the intersections of diversity, inclusion, and equity, with what we do as academic librarians.

So, let this be me laying down the gauntlet and I guess I'm happy to chair this subcommittee? Looking forward to the conversation, my friends! Open to any and all ideas. Talk soon and have a great summer!

    Yours,
    Derrick

    Hey Derrick,

I was talking with Tarida about this some time ago. I feel like not many are even aware of our existence and I would like to make us more visible and share information, so I am with you on this.  Last year, Tarida and I did a roundtable at the ACRL Conference to ask for feedback. We can do a presentation targeting feedback about what we have done and/or what we can do in the future.

Thank you for initiating the conversation,

    Freddy

Count me in! I am definitely interested in presenting something during our time slot. I agree that this committee is not very well known. I think a program on discussing implicit bias would be interesting.

I work at OSU and recently took this implicit bias training. Happy to provide details and/or contact info if that might be helpful.

Folks, this sounds good and I am happy to support this. I've conducted quite a bit of training on the topic of implicit bias (although I would not call myself an expert) and I get the sense that people feel like 'been there, done that.' I think that's a bit problematic because, although people may have a command of the concepts theoretically, it still controls thinking/behavior and few people/organizations have been able to implement strategies to mitigate it.

What I'm wondering is if it might be more meaningful to look at EDI issues from the standpoint of systems and the barriers to creating equitable and inclusive organizations. I feel like we're getting there (in terms of where the conversation is headed) but we need to be more intentional about framing that narrative.

There is a researcher who spoke (I think) at the ACRL meeting in Baltimore. He has several publications out about systems thinking and creating systems-level change for diversity. His name is Frank Golom, assistant professor of psychology at Loyola, Maryland. Here's a citation (with a link to a PDF) to one of his more recent articles.

At any rate, I think there are tons of directions to go, but I think framing a presentation/discussion around oppressive systems and working against (perhaps rebuilding) those systems could be helpful and provocative.

All that said, if you all feel that the topic of implicit bias is a better way to go, I would support that!

Just my 1.2 cents (adjusted for inflation).

    Hi everyone,

Sorry for the delay in getting back. I've been away at a writing workshop and am just now catching up on emails. How about we have everyone interested in participating in the subcommittee check in ASAP so we can reach that impending deadline. We know we have that Saturday slot and while we might not be able to lock down a person or panel YET but at least we'll have the time allotted with which we can fill. Of course, all of this might be moot, but I'm very excited about putting together a panel and hosting something that shows off the work we're so invested in doing.

I like the idea of doing something on implicit bias and systemic problems that are barriers to getting us where we should be as an organization and am very much open to moving forward on that.

So, with that, I know Latrice is on board, Jolie thanks for your feedback, would you also be interested in working on the committee? Mark, I don't want to make presumptions but have always appreciated your guidance and insight, so thank you for that. Tarida, I know you emailed me about someone else whom I can also reach out to, and I'm not sure we'll need many more people than that, but we need to get this party started to reach the deadline! Let me know and we'll go on from there to GoToMeeting or Zoom or Skype or something as a subcommittee.

    Thanks, all!

    Thanks, Tarida! Got you down.

Proposing that we keep this open until Monday, August 6th for interested folks to chime in and then move forward on trying to come up with a panel proposal on behalf of the subcommittee by the week of the 27th. That way we can share with the entire committee for feedback and make the August 31st deadline? Open to refinements and suggestions, of course. Thanks everyone!

    Hi all,

So, in moving forward it looks like I have in addition to myself, Latrice, Jolie, and Tarida on board as members of the subcommittee to plan on a panel for 2019 Annual. I'll send out a message to the subcommittee coordinate getting something sketched out so we can meet the deadline at the end of the month. Looking forward to working with everyone.

    Hi all,

Checking in to let you know that I got our proposal submitted this morning. Thanks for everyone's feedback and special shout out to the members of the subcommittee for letting my coffee-fueled hot take turn into something useful for the committee and ACRL! After all these years of examining the framework and the standards, it's nice to not just look at equity, diversity, and inclusion, but at ways we can look forward to recognizing those of us committed to this work and putting a spotlight on them.

Tarida, I also needed to, in order to complete the submission, needed to put someone down as a contact, and used you, since we were on the subcommittee together and you did much of the heavy lifting pre-gaming the application.

Thanks again, all. Stay tuned and talk soon!

    Topic
    Transforming: Library Workforce

Short Program Description (for use in program book and other printed materials)
This session will examine diversity and inclusion in librarianship as seen through an autoethnographic lens. It will bring together library professionals across a range of roles and areas-such as those within public services, technical services, and administration-who have engaged in meaningful self-reflections of their experiences and personal identities and how these have directly informed their daily work. It will also feature perspectives from library professionals from different stages of their careers, including veteran librarians and in particular, new and emerging voices in the profession.

Full Program Description (for use in the online scheduler)
Autoethnography is a qualitative research method centered on personal experiences; through self-reflection and observation, it presents an opportunity for researchers to actively examine themselves and their sense of self as they relate to the cultural, social, and political context surrounding them. It also presents an opportunity for library professionals to critically explore our own field at large, as well as how diversity, inclusion, and the intersectionality of our identities impact the practice of librarianship.

As a nod to the personalized nature of autoethnographies, this session will be framed as an active and conversational exchange between the panelists, rather than an isolated set of individual presentations.
