And I have been remiss in sending details from our monthly meetings so following is a summary from our October meeting. Please let me know if you have any questions or if you have issues to bring to my attention. I hope everyone is staying healthy and well during this unusual fall.
Executive Board Liaison Update to Staff and Member Leaders, October 2021
Key highlights from the October 2021 EB meeting:
Executive Director Hall continues to benchmark and learn from association practices. We've found that contemporary practice continues to happen twice a year and is connected with convenings similar to LLX but it might be focused on learning, education or governance. These convenings are not only about governance functions but member governance & financial leadership development. Previously we've talked about whether governance should be a separate function apart from LLX and what we've found is that best practice continues to collate the two.
- Executive Director Hall reported that she is having exploratory conversations with smaller divisions or units seeking to meet in person. The idea of LLX is to be the foundation for these groups to hold a conference within a conference. Organization of contracts, marketing, etc. related to conference and audience development are opportunities to streamline the work.
- President Wong provided a parliamentarian update for 2022, including plans to support LLX. An open call for a new parliamentarian will be conducted as our current parliamentarian is planning to retire in 2022.
- The synthesis of EDISJ initiative and activity inventory across the association will be shared with the Board. There is a cross functional team that will have an opportunity to review the strengths and opportunities.
- The draft Transforming ALA Governance (TAG) comparative analysis was shared. The table illustrates governance of member-led peer associations similar to ALA's disposition and ratios of Executive Board, Governance staff, and Council size.
- A staffing number update is that we have tended to be around 222 staff; due to retirements and staff coming/going we are currently around 208 staff members. We expect to stay approximately 220 this coming year.
