Please join us for this upcoming ACRL Leadership DG webinar in November presented by Dr. Alma C. Ortega, past-convener of ACRL Leadership DG!
Webinar Title: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: Library Leadership in Academic Institutions

Date: 11/16, Friday at 9 am PST / 12 pm EST
Summary: Research on academic library leadership continues to be scarce. The speaker began the conversation on toxic leadership in 2015 at the ACRL Leadership Discussion Group's presentation in ALA Annual. After a mixed methods national study, five types of toxic academic library leaders were found. Remarkably just as positive leaders are similar in their behaviors so are toxic leaders similar in theirs, though these may cause a detrimental impact to their libraries. This webinar presentation will explore these five types of toxic academic library leaders from this research.

Speaker: Dr. Alma C. Ortega has been a Reference Librarian at the University of San Diego's Copley Library since fall 2003. She was granted tenured May 2009. She is currently the liaison to the School of Peace Studies, Spanish, Italian, Latin American Studies, Asian Studies, and Medieval and Renaissance Studies. Alma develops the collection in her areas, teaches information literacy and technology, and works on special projects. Her research interests include leadership styles in academic libraries, library as a place and space, social media, and archives in libraries. Alma earned two bachelor's degrees: Peace & Conflict Studies (focus on Children's Rights) and Spanish (focus on Iberian Languages) from the University of California at Berkeley, two master's degrees: Library & Information Studies and Latin American Studies from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a PhD in Leadership Studies from the University of San Diego.
