I'd like to second Susan's invitation to apply for MLA's Research Training Institute. I am one of the 2019 fellows. RTI was a very important to learn about research and to develop research skills. Having a mentor for the research project was invaluable. The most important thing that RTI did for me was helping me see myself as a researcher. Having that self-identity has had an important impact so far.
If you are concerned that your proposed research project isn't "strong enough," don't be. Yes, you want to have an interesting research question and a basic idea of how you want to answer your question, but it's okay if your project feels half-baked. Part of the institute is helping fellows improve their research plans, through instructional activities and discussion with your research mentor.
