Program Details

This Program will present how the work of an academic librarian has increased while working remotely since the outbreak of COVID19 in March 2020. Extrapolating from Speaker's experience as an academic librarian re-entering the profession full time after several years away, I posit evidence about how motivation leads to engagement which can turn to burnout with supportive working conditions. The overinvolvement of older librarians to remain relevant and secure their jobs can lead to exhaustion and burnout, yet also contribute to increased productivity and a sense of accomplishment. Scholarship shows that librarians with a solid career identity who experience a supportive work environment with positive reinforcement, and autonomy, can become over-engaged and ultimately experience work-related burnout. The institution can mitigate this condition by allowing for flexible work schedules and embracing teleworking which has proven to be an asset for increasing job satisfaction and productivity.
