Graduated from Guilford College, Greensboro with an AB degree and a major in Political Science (1969). Obtained the MS in Library Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1972), and the Ph.D. in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2002). Has been the director of the Williamsburg Regional Library since July 6, 2000. Since 1975, has been the top library administrator of public libraries, a multi-type library system, and a regional library in North Carolina, Texas, Illinois, and Virginia. Active in both state and national library organizations, has served as Illinois ALA Chapter Councilor, president of the Small and Medium-Sized Libraries section of the Public Library Association and served several terms on the Board of Directors of the Public Library Association. Is a past president of the Virginia Library Association. Served on ALA Council as the representative of the Intellectual Freedom Round Table 2009-2012. Is a member (2012-2015) of the ALA Executive Board. Has published articles on cataloging, ALA’s Code of Ethics, Standards for Public Libraries, a book on libraries for non-librarians, and edited and contributed to Running a Small Library: A How-To-Do-It Manual published by Neal-Schuman in June 2006. He has taught graduate library courses for the University of Illinois Urbana/Champaign and Catholic University. Is a member of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the Greater Williamsburg Chamber and Tourism Alliance. Is Treasurer of the Rotary Club of James City County. As a consultant has assisted libraries in Texas, Illinois, and Virginia with building programs, library planning, operational studies and space studies. Has given conference presentations on Library Foundations, Friends of the Library Organizations, Library Boards, and Library Organization. Married to Ileen Moorman. The Moorman’s have three children, Johanna Moorman, Jessica Trinoskey, and John Moorman Jr. and one grandchild. John and Ileen reside in the Glenwood Acres subdivision near Croaker. John Jr. lives in College Park, Maryland. Their daughters live in Highland Springs, Virginia and Indianapolis, Indiana.
