ECPA revisited in congressional lame duck session?

Heads up:  Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) and the congressional lame duck session....

We have heard that it is more than likely that Senator Leahy will bring up ECPA during the Congressional lame duck session in mid-November.  We are waiting to see just what provisions are being changed.  Will keep you all up-to-date as we hear more, although likely we won't hear much until after the November elections.

Goals Update October 2012

The Committee has finalized our call for proposals for the Midwinter Meeting in January and sent it out via a number of listservs.  We have also posted the call in ALA Connect.  Our plan is to evaluate proposals and choose the two winners by the 25th so that the titles and descriptions will appear in the printed program for Midwinter.

What is storytelling with data?

This blog post interested me as a follow up to our committee's presentation in June: http://eagereyes.org/journalism/storytelling-minard-vs-nightingale. He describes how data visuals can, or cannot, tell a story well.

Summary of Current Activities

The Discussion Forums Coordinating Committee sponsored two really exciting Forums at Annual.

Rethinking Your Reference Collection, moderated by Christy Caldwell, had 23 attendees and a very lively discussion about the use and fate of print reference collections.  Participants were both academic and public librarians and discussion covered topics from decision-making to dealing with staff resistance.

Goals for 2012-2013

The committee goals are to solicit proposals for discussion forums at ALA Midwinter and ALA Annual, evaluate them, and select the two best for each.
