Minutes from the

2016 ALA Midwinter Meetings

of the

2016 Batchelder Award Commitee

Friday, January 8 and Saturday, January 9, 2016

Boston, MA

Present:                  Beth Rosania, Chair

                                Maria Dietrich, Committee Member

                                Kathryn Johnson, Committee Member

                                Wendy Stephens, Committee Member

                                Sarah Washkoviak, Committee Member

  • Committee members got re-acquainted and settled in.
  • Beth summarized again the Committee's charge, explained the process and procedures for the book discussion and voting.
  • Committee members re-familiarized themselves with the titles under consideration, then discussed the titles based upon award criteria, selecting books for balloting.
  • Once the final ballot was arrived at, committee members voted.
  • After tallying and verifying the tally, the Batchelder Award book was selected.
  • Next the committee agreed upon  a process for selection of the Batchelder Honor titles and they were selected.
  • The final awards roster was, as follows:

2016 Batchelder Award--

                The Wonderful Fluffy Little Squishy, by Beatrice Alemagna, published by Enchanted                           Lion Books

2016  Batchelder Honor Awards--

                Adam and Thomas, by Aharon Appelfeld, published by Seven Stories Press

                Grandma Lives in a Perfume Village, by Fang Suzhen, published by NorthSouth Books

                Written and Drawn by Henrietta, by Liniers, published by TOON Books

Committee members then worked together to complete press releases, including pronunciation guides, received instructions regarding making award announcement calls to the winning publishers, then adjourned to deliver the press release information to the ALA Press Office staff.

Committee members reconvened at Beth's hotel room on Sunday afternoon, January 10, to call all winners. On the morning of January 11,they met again prior to the Youth Media Awards event  for their committee photo and to be present for the announcements. Beth will make the actual presentations at ALA Annual in Orlando (June 2016) and the committee will keep in touch.

Summarize work accomplished, decisions reached, and follow-up action needed (objectives, timetable, and assignments) since your last meeting.*: Books submitted were reviewed. We met at Midwinter in Boston, discussed books under consideration, voted and delivered award-winning titles for announcements. Completed press releases. Attended YMA. Corrections for manual will be submitted at a later date.

Our newly appointed committee members have introduced themselves to each other via an email chain. As Committee Chair, I have been in touch with PGC K.T. Horning and 2017 Batchelder Award Committee Chair Jamie Naidoo. I have invited a guest speaker to our January meeting and am waiting to hear back from her. I am working on the agenda for our initial meeting.
