Seeking the new GODORT Web Administrator

Based on feedback at the Midwinter Meeting, I drafted the following announcement for DttP.  Please let me know ASAP if you see problems.  Valerie says that the spring issue is scheduled to be mailed on April 2nd, so people will have several weeks to respond.  I would like the Web Managers group to help draft the job description so that it works for everyone.  There is also the question of a stipend: if the job requires time, such as waiting for Collage, should there be a stipend?  The DttP editor stipend is currently $750 per year.

GODORT is seeking a new Web Administrator for a three-year initial term of office to begin in July 2010.  The successful candidate will have responsibility for GODORT’s online presence; serve as GODORT’s liaison to ALA’s Web Staff; and coordinate the round table’s Web Managers to provide accurate and timely content.  To assure consideration, applications should be submitted by April 30th, 2010.  For details, see the GODORT wiki wikis.ala.org/godort/index.php/Administrator

tho I guess the first thing is for this group to decide if $750 is appropriate and if not, what is.  Then when there's a figure, take it to Steering for vote...

The job is important and I don't want to undervalue the position.  Finding a qualified person to lead the group maintaining GODORT's web presence is critical and I am pleased that Starr has contributed her experience to the discussion.

That said, I truly hope that the amount of effort needed to maintain a few virtually static ALA Web pages could be managed by a volunteer who wouldn't have to make it their vocation.  If we achieve the goal of migrating out content off the ALA website, wouldn't much of the work consist of coordinating the wiki work?  If so, it may be less intensive than the DttP editor's workload.

Before making a proposal to Steering, what do other web managers think would be an appropriate stipend? $750? $500? $250? (Would money motivate you to apply, or is something else needed?)

I do think there should still be a stipend, considering that ALA's eventual move to another CMS will entail some maintenance on the part of the new Web Admin, if only to maintain the links to the wiki. And from past experience, while that sounds quick and straight-forward, I am sure it will prove to be anything but.

However, since the majority of the position should be a bit less, thanks to the wiki migration, a smaller stipend is probably appropriate, something in the $250 - 500 range. Personally, the stipend is an attractive enticement to me--I know that it caused me to consider applying for the open DttP editor position at one point.

I received some thoughtful responses from Steering regarding a possible stipend and decided that it would be best to recruit a true volunteer for this position, as in the past.  The expectations are that GODORT will be using ALA Connect and the wiki as its main tools, so Starr's last duties in Collage may be like "turning out the lights" for many pages in the ALA site so that it won't look dated or need to be updated in the future.

Given that ALA does not pay expenses or honoraria to librarians living in North America nor to ALA members who participate in Annual Conference programs, paying a stipend to the Web Administrator may be an idea that we should not pursue at this time.

http://wikis.ala.org/godort/index.php/Administrator states these duties from the PPM:

A. Outline of duties
The Website Administrator has overall responsibility for the GODORT web site.

B. Specific Functions
The specific functions of the Website Administrator are as follows:

    1. Attends Publications Committee meetings at the Annual Conference and Midwinter Meeting.

    2. Chairs the Web Managers meeting at the Annual Conference and Midwinter Meeting and facilitates communication among web managers between conferences.

    3. Uploads all edits to the Bylaws and the PPM to the GODORT web site and sends copies to the Archivist.

    4. Adds updated DttP images, tables of contents, communications from the Chair, and GODORT letters.

    5. Maintains and updates all pages not maintained by GODORT committees.

    6. Updates GODORT directory and committee rosters.

    7. Creates web version of conference schedule and updates before each conference meeting.

    8. Gathers all minutes after meetings and posts draft and final versions to web.

Looking at this list, it seems as though 1 & 2 remain valid; 3 might be done by the chair of Bylaws & Organization; 4 could remain valid or be further discussed; 5 is questionable if the wiki is being used by committees; 6 might be something the web manager creates, after which it becomes the duty of each unit leader; 7 belongs to the chair of the schedule committee; and 8 devolves to each unit leader.  IF so,

    A. Outline of duties
The Website Administrator has overall responsibility for the GODORT web presence.

    3.  Adds updated DttP images, tables of contents, communications from the Chair, and GODORT letters.

    4. Maintains pages within http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/rts/godort/index.cfm as  GODORT committees migrate content to the wiki and ALA Connect.

    5. Creates GODORT directory and committee rosters at the start of the term which are then maintained by GODORT unit leaders.
